Organizing a top secret event for someone's 40th or 50th birthday? Try these highly confidential invites. Two top secret designs with fortieth and fiftieth parties in mind.

Take care with the printing out and folding of your invites. Although they are free, I have designed them to look good - and a little time taken over the printing and folding will pay dividends.

Write out your guest list before you start filling out the invite cards. It will be easier to mark people off as you go. And when you wake up in the middle of the night worrying that you have forgotten someone - you will be able to check!

Surprise parties need that little extra care in planning than a normal event does. As well as organizing everything you have to keep things a secret - not always easy to do!

Here are a few tips and ideas to help you with your planning:
  • Send out your surprise party invitations in plenty of time. 3-4 weeks beforehand gives everyone plenty of time to make arrangements to attend.
  • Ask your guests to arrive about 30 minutes before the guest of honor is due. That allows for latecomers - and gives everyone a chance to settle down and take their places.
  • To keep things a secret you need to think ahead - how will you get the guest there without them guessing? The earlier you can plan this out, the more it is likely to succeed.
  • Be secretive with your planning notes! You don't want your party recipient to come across them by accident.
  • Think about where you will hide things - food, party supplies and gifts all need to be kept out of the way.
  • If there is anyone likely to spill the secret, then you may want to keep them out of the loop until the last minute.
  • Simplify, simplify! Don't get anxious about finding that exact shade of napkin, or the perfect shaped balloon - honestly - no-one is going to notice.
  • Don't try to do everything all on your own. Rope in friends to help with the cooking and decorating. It's too much for one person to manage.
  • Assign someone to be 'photographer' to catch to look on the surprised birthday boy's (or girl's!) face.
  • Don't forget there is going to be a lot of clearing up to do. If you don't want to be stuck with this chore on your own, then ask someone to help you in advance.

Take things slowly and one step at a time and you will be fine. Remember the adage 'it will be alright on the night' is usually true! Just concentrate on having a good time yourself, and the chances are that everyone else will too.
